Moblic E7 stuffs WiMAX, QWERTY, a gamepad, and all our dreams and wishes into a MID

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 23rd, 2010

“Remember the story about the boy who suddenly got everything he ever wanted?” asks the high-pitched man in a funny suit. Gene Wilder was probably referring to the Moblic E7. This 4-inch WVGA MID sports an unnamed 600MHz processor, 8GB of built-in storage, WiMAX, microSD expansion, but most impressively slides open to reveal a QWERTY keyboard and delicious SNES-style gaming controls. There's not much more info to go on, like OS, production plans, or price, but sign us up for a dozen.

Sigma trio espied at PMA, COO expresses interest in supporting 'mirrorless camera systems'

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 23rd, 2010

Still no word on price, but Sigma's recently-announced DP2s, DP1x, and SD15 cameras were on hand at PMA, just out of reach of our greasy hands. A shame, really, but at least we managed to at least stand in the trinity's presence, right? Perhaps more interesting comes from the mouth of Chief Operating Officer Kazuto Yamaki, who in an interview with Digital Photography Review predicts that zoom lenses are in the future for mirrorless camera systems — which, for those not hip to his jive,……

Cambridge University finds credit card security flaw, uses the money for beer pong supplies (video)

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 16th, 2010

Oh, those crazy kids at Cambridge University — when not doing keg stands or playing Hacky Sack in the quad they're hard at work proving the vulnerability of the EMV verification used in credit and debit cards (or as it's called across the pond, Chip and PIN). We won't go into too much detail (because we don't have much detail) but a flaw has been discovered that allows one to convince the terminal that a card's PIN has been entered — and you know what that means: free mone……

HexBug's robotic creatures are the creepy crawlers of the future

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 16th, 2010

Okay, so it isn't as artsy as making gooey bugs in a miniature oven, but HexBug's little micro-robotic tchotchkes are a good time in their own right. The digital entomologists at HexBugs decided to unleash the new Ant Micro and Nano Newton at New York City's Toy Fair, and for some peculiar reason we were quite enamored with watching these autonomous, high speed creatures run around the carpeted show floor. Powered by two button cell batteries, $11.99 Ant Micro has front and rear tou……

Inbrics' Android-based M1 slated to ship this year

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 9th, 2010

We already caught a fair amount of play time with Inbrics' Android-based M1 at CES, but it looks as if the company is fixing to “officially” reveal it next week at Mobile World Congress. We're still debating whether or not this thing is a bona fide smartphone or yet another MID that'll have a tough time gaining acceptance in this cruel, cruel world, but either way, it's apparently on track for release later this year. According to details scooped up by Pocket-lint, the company i……

zoomMediaPlus' zoomIt is the iPhone's long overdue SD card reader

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 9th, 2010

Sorry if we're the sort of folks to look a gift SD card reader in the mouth, but while we're oh-so-happy that Apple finally opened up application-enabled hardware development in iPhone OS 3.0, we really wish an accessory like this had been available for the iPhone right from the start. The new zoomIt SD card reader from zoomMediaPlus adds a bit of external, swappable memory to the iPhone and iPod touch at long last, giving you the ability to store your iPhone's pictures on the card,……

Microsoft Tag makes a video appearance, still seeking popularity

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 2nd, 2010

“It's the hyperlink in the physical world” says a Microsoft PR man, giving us the most succinct definition of what Redmond's Tag initiative is all about. Having announced its alternative take on the barcode at CES 2009, Microsoft has been working behind the scenes on proliferating the use of these multicolored Tags, which are designed to be snapped by nearby cameraphones. Once the pattern is recognized, you can obtain digital content directly on your phone — whether it be a website lin……

Acer's GD235HZ 23.6-inch 3D display is ready for your glasses-equipped exploits

Posted in Announcements by Nicr on the February 2nd, 2010

You could say 3D has hit the mainstream computer today (or something similarly bombastic and partially untrue), as Acer has just released its GD235HZ 120Hz LCD, specially prepped for working with NVIDIA's 3D Vision active-shutter glasses system. The 23.6-inch, 16:9 display retails for $399, and while it's going to be great for 3D gaming for the next few months until you grow bored of Avatar and frustrated by Left 4 Dead 2, the 1920 x 1080 resolution is going to really come in handy ……
